Gold Chains
One of the pieces of jewelry that seems to always be in style is the gold chain, which for a lot of people symbolize prestige, beauty, power and wealth. Thanks to the malleability and color of the gold metal, it’s quite often used to make jewelry from it. When it’s pure, gold is quite easily bendable and soft, so it usually has to be combined with other metals and made into an alloy before being turned into jewelry.
When it’s pure, gold is considered to have 24 karats. The smaller the number of karats, the smaller the purity and the less gold that alloy has. That also means that when the gold jewelry has a smaller number of karats it will be cheaper.
Some of the things you should be careful about when you’re buying gold chains is that the chain is not hollow inside or that it has the actual level of purity that the sellers says it has. You want to deal with reputable sellers when you’re buying jewelry, since you can be easily fooled when you’re a beginner at this. You also want to check the engravings and the hallmarks on the jewelry, making sure that it has the karat rating claimed by the seller.
You can find gold chains in a number of patterns and designs, with links that are oval, circular, rectangular or square. In some cases the chain will look like a rope that is twisted while in other cases it will use links that are fitted tightly and will seem to be flat strands whenever they’re placed on surfaces. There is also a type of chain that looks like a snake’s body and it’s usually hollow inside.
Always make sure you know what you’re buying. You might end up with a piece of jewelry that is just gold plated and has silver or another metal inside.
